Oral Health = Overall Health

My journey to house call dentistry.

A whole new world opened up to me the day I told my orthodontist at age 12 that if he wanted me to wear the rubber bands and not chew gum and make all my appointments, he had to tell me exactly why I had to do all those things. My friends already had braces and they were in pain. I desperately wanted my teeth to be straight and my lips to come together naturally without me having to force them. But….I had to know the how and the why.

Fast forward twenty-odd years later.

My grandmother needed a new lower partial denture but had horrible sciatica, making it extremely difficult for her to come to my office. Only 10 minutes from my practice, I went to her! After only two days, I received a phone call from a fellow parishioner of Gram’s who had seen her at their Women’s Guild. Could I do the same thing for her grandmother who was beginning to have bad breath? She was bed bound after a stroke and had not seen a dentist in over two years. A whole new world opened up to me: house call dentistry!
Taking care of my patients has been incredibly rewarding.

Once I answered the call to help those who could not come to me, I found most caregivers were not educated at all in oral health. This lack in dental knowledge for those living in senior communities as well as those who have chosen to stay in place has lit a new fire: to educate caregivers and all affiliated in geriatric health care!

My mission is to speak about the signs and symptoms that caregivers and loved ones should be looking for in and around the mouth for better, more efficient patient-centered care.
